SABRES SOUTHERN CROSS CHALLENGE WRAP-UP

Less than a week after a massively successful ECC for the Sabres program, we had nine Sabres at Basketball Victoria’s Southern Cross Challenge!

Three Sabres boys, three girls and three coaches were all on show as part of the BV Metro development program for Under 14/15 athletes.

As part of Vic Metro Navy, Oscar Humble (16.2) aided his team to a 5-1 record. Adrian Cole (16.1) averaged almost 10 points for Vic Metro Orange, helping his side to a fourth-placed finish. His Sabres teammate Jamie Si was a part of the undefeated, and eventual champions, Vic Metro White.

In the Under 14 program, Remy Phillip (14.1) and her Vic Metro Navy squad had a perfect tournament, finishing 7-0 and taking home the championship.

Two U16.1 Sabres were also featured, with Isla Airey’s Vic Metro Navy finishing 5-1 record and Natalia Hordejuk’s Vic Metro Orange going undefeated at 6-0.

Along with our six athletes, three of our amazing coaches also had the chance to sharpen their skillsets alongside some of the country’s best.

Evan Vallance (B14.2), Sam Groves (G12.1) and Tim Barber (G12.5) were all lucky enough to work alongside the best coaches and aspiring athletes.

“It was a great experience working with and competing against with the top young players in the boys Under 15 age group at the SCC,” Vallance said.

“I was also very lucky to have a junior national coach in Darren Perry as my Head Coach whose wealth of knowledge and mentoring across the weekend provided me with a fantastic learning environment.”

SBA Head Coaches Nathan Crosswell and Simon Giovannoni said, “Like the ECC last week, the SCC was a great chance for our younger athletes and coaches to develop within the Vic Metro environment. The players have worked hard with their domestic clubs and within the Sabres rep program to improve their skills and basketball knowledge. This was also a great development opportunity for our coaches Evan, Tim and Samantha to gain state team exposure.”

Congratulations to all players and coaches on their week!
