Victorian Youth Championship Men Senior Coach EOI
The Southern Basketball Association is seeking Expressions of Interest from suitably qualified candidates for the following vacant coaching position for the 2025 Big V season: Victorian Youth Championship Men Senior Coach.
The Southern Basketball Association underpinning teams compete in the Big V Victorian Youth Championship division.
Working closely with the SBA Head of Programs Director of Coaching , NBL1 Mens Head Coach and SBA Management, the head coach of our VYC Men’s team will be responsible for the development of players in preparation for senior basketball.
The successful candidates will be required to possess:
- A Working with Children’s Check;
- Experience coaching within the Big V system;
- Knowledge of the Sandringham Sabres elite player pathway;

- Exceptional basketball knowledge;
- The ability to develop and manage coaching staff;
- The ability to develop Sabres junior players into senior players in line with the Sabres philosophy of individual player development and Sabres style of play;
- Outstanding communication skills within a coaching and player development environment;

- Organised, adaptable and willing to work within the structure of the wider association;
- Ability to work in-between our NBL1 teams and our Junior Sabres program;

Assistant Basketball Director of Coaching – Girls/Women
An exciting opportunity exists to join the Southern Basketball Association as the Assistant Director of Coaching – Girls/Women.
Reporting to the Assistant Program Director of Coaching (APDOC) the primary purpose of the role is to identify, nurture and develop Sabres players to their full potential using the Sabres style of play. The role encompasses working across the Sabres senior programs (NBL1/VYC), junior Sabres representative programs (VJBL), SBA domestic competitions and local community to support the delivery and growth of the SBA girls’ programs.
The role requires the ability to work flexible hours including after-hours work on weeknights and across weekends. The role can be full-time or part-time for the right candidate.
Extensive basketball knowledge and coaching experience is essential for the role, including the proven ability to successfully develop and implement basketball programs and drive the adoption of a style of play across the Sabres programs. You will have experience developing and mentoring coaches, including building and maintaining effective relationships with them.
You will have excellent presentation and communication skills and the ability to effectively engage with a range of stakeholders including coaches, players, parents, domestic club representatives and external community stakeholders. You demonstrate an adaptable and collaborative approach and remain calm and respectful under pressure.
You have the ability to lead and represent basketball and the SBA in a professional manner, and preferably have a good understanding of VJBL, VYC and NBL1.
The suitable candidate must also possess:
- Driver’s License
- Current Working With Children Check
- First Aid accreditation
- Basketball Australia Coaching Accreditation Level 2 – Association Level
Responsibilities of the role include:
- Planning and Evaluation:
- Evaluate SBA Girls Domestic competitions.
- Identify prospective Sabres players from junior domestic competitions.
- Recruitment of players into Sabres Girls’ rep program.
- Sabres Player Evaluation (using the Sabres Athlete Management System).
- Assist with organised tryouts and team selection.
- Player Development:
- Implement SBA Girls only development programs.
- Assist in Sabres style of play development.
- Conduct and facilitate on court training sessions for Sabres teams.
- Ensure athletes are training under adequate and safe conditions and with a holistic approach to their physical development.
- Coaching Development:
- Coach Evaluation (using Sabres Athlete Management System).
- Assist in coaching the coaches through training sessions and Coach Development clinics.
- Review coaches game nights.
- Attend Friday Night games at Southern Basketball Centre and provide coaching support if requested/required.
- Community Programs:
Assist the Director of Coaching to facilitate the following programs:
- Daytime Ladies / Walking Basketball.
- Coach Education (Community Coach Courses / Community Coach Courses).
- School Holiday Camps / Sabre Cubs program.
- Administration
- Administration to support the Sabres rep program, Sabres Athlete Management System, community programs and other as required.
