SABRES VYC WOMEN ADVANCE TO SEMI FINALS
Our Sabres VYC Women have defeated the Ringwood Hawks in the Elimination Final, and now advance to round two of Big V finals.
Bolstered by returning NBL1 players Ella Batish, Morgan Riley and Sophie Van Vliet, the Sabres shot out of the blocks early. Riley scored the first five points of the game, stunning the home side’s fans and forcing the Hawks to change up their plans. The energy and intensity lifted for both sides in the second quarter, with sloppy turnovers and bad fouls late in the period meaning we took just a one-point advantage into the main break.
We must have left something in the sheds at half time, as the Hawks tied and then took the lead with the first two possessions of the third quarter. This woke our Sabres back up, as we went point-for-point for most of the third quarter.
The turning point of the quarter came on the back of back-to-back three’s, locking the score back up at 46-46.
Although trailing to start the final quarter, excellent defence and great leadership by Batish and Riley meant we took the lead back late in the game. Some clutch free throws in the final minute sealed the 67-60 win for the Sabres.
